Community Resiliency and Insurance Marketplace Initiative
Addressing the availability and affordability of P&C insurance
As communities across the United States grapple with significant losses from natural disasters, it’s important that lessons from these events lead us to better approaches. That means taking meaningful steps to:
- Mitigate and adapt to more frequent extreme weather.
- Address the underlying factors that leave communities vulnerable to both personal and financial harm.
While climate change is rightly cited as an explanation for insurance availability and affordability challenges, this is an incomplete answer to a more complex problem. Economic inflation, aging infrastructure and population migration into higher-risk areas are primary drivers of rising weather-related losses. There is also a constellation of other factors, including the staggering cost of litigation abuse as well as land management and building codes that fail to contemplate the weather and climate risk that local communities are exposed to.
Insurance plays a critical role in a sustainable path forward
When insurers can properly assess risk and set fair prices, this system functions reliably – even in the face of extreme weather. To that end, the Travelers Institute is hosting a series of dialogues in communities across the country to examine how we can all support the creation of more resilient communities. These conversations explore:
- How insurance markets work and the role of risk-based pricing.
- The impact of climate change on atmospheric perils.
- Insurance markets of last resort.
- The latest building science and the role of building codes.
- The state of community infrastructure.
- Disaster preparedness for families, businesses and broader communities.
- The impact of litigation abuse and the need for legal reform.
- Actions we can all take to promote resilient communities.
